Cruise ports near Nashville: where to drive and when to fly

September 18, 2026BlogComments Off on Cruise ports near Nashville: where to drive and when to fly

Nashville is a long way from the sea, but it is closer to a cruise ship than most people think. Several ports are within a day’s drive, and BNA flies nonstop to the rest. The choice between driving and flying decides which ships you can take, what the trip costs and how the first day feels. Here is how the ports stack up from Middle Tennessee.

Ports you can drive to in a day

Mobile, Alabama: about 6.5 hours

The closest port to Nashville, straight down I-65. Mobile is small and easy: parking is next to the terminal and you can be on board within an hour of arriving. Sailings go to the Western Caribbean and the Bahamas. The catch is the calendar. Ships sail from Mobile for part of the year, mainly autumn through spring, so check the season before you plan around it.

New Orleans, Louisiana: about 7.5 to 8 hours

The best all-round drive-to port for Nashville. It sails year round to the Western Caribbean, with a wider choice of ships and cruise lines than Mobile, and the city itself is worth a night before or after. Leave Nashville in the morning, have dinner in the French Quarter and board the next day.

Jacksonville, Florida: about 8.5 to 9 hours

A good option for short Bahamas cruises. It is an easy terminal and a straightforward drive through Atlanta.

A long day, or two easy ones

Port Canaveral, Florida: about 10.5 hours

Home to some of the largest ships in the world and to Disney Cruise Line, about an hour east of Orlando. Many Nashville families make it a road trip: drive down, spend a day or two at the theme parks, then cruise.

Tampa, Florida: about 10.5 hours

Western Caribbean and Mexico sailings, usually on mid-size ships. A quiet, convenient port.

Ports where flying makes more sense

  • Miami and Fort Lauderdale: the widest choice of ships and Eastern Caribbean itineraries, a short nonstop from BNA.
  • Galveston, Texas: about twelve hours by road, so most Nashville travelers fly to Houston instead.
  • Seattle and Vancouver: for Alaska. Our Alaska cruise guide for first-timers covers which to choose.
  • Europe: Barcelona, Rome and Athens for the Mediterranean, and river-cruise cities such as Amsterdam and Budapest.

One port that no longer belongs on the list is Charleston. It was a popular drive from Tennessee for years, but the city stopped basing cruise ships there at the end of 2024.

Drive or fly? How to decide

  • Count the travelers. For two people, flying is often as cheap as driving once you add fuel, a hotel night and a week of port parking. For a family of four or five, driving usually wins comfortably.
  • Count the days. Driving to Mobile or New Orleans costs you little time. Driving to Central Florida and back adds two days to the trip.
  • Arrive the day before. Whether you drive or fly, do not plan to arrive on sailing day. A delayed flight or a wreck on I-65 can cost you the whole cruise. A hotel night near the port is cheap insurance.
  • Driving opens up late deals. When you do not need airfare, an unsold cabin three weeks out becomes a real option. See how in our guide to finding last-minute cruise deals.

Let us price both

For any sailing, we work out the cost of driving and of flying side by side, including parking, the hotel night and transfers, and book whichever you choose. Start with our page on cruise planning from Nashville, look at current Caribbean cruise packages, or call (615) 889-1886.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest cruise port to Nashville?

Mobile, Alabama, about six and a half hours by car, followed by New Orleans at roughly seven and a half to eight hours.

Can I park at the cruise port for the week?

Yes. Every drive-to port has secure parking at or near the terminal, charged by the day. We include the cost when we compare driving with flying.

Do cruises still leave from Charleston?

Not as a home port. Charleston stopped basing cruise ships there at the end of 2024, so Nashville travelers who used to drive there now use Jacksonville, Port Canaveral or the Gulf ports.
